The sensor pulses do not correlate to the pulses of the crankshaft sensor. The camshaft sensor pulses less times than expected in a specified amount of engine revolutions when compared to the crankshaft sensor. The wiring or connection to the speed sensor is getting shorted or losing connection intermittently. Visually checks the wiring and connections to the camshaft sensor for loose connections or damaged wiring.

Failure to check and remove the camshaft sensor to look for excessive amounts of metal on the sensor which may cause erratic or no readings from the sensor. An intermittent camshaft sensor signal can cause the engine to run rough, jerk, or misfire while driving. Code P is triggered when the camshaft sensor does not correlate to the position of the crankshaft.

The crankshaft sensor should also be checked during the diagnostic checks for any problems that could cause the code to be received. How to inspect a used car How to check the engine when buying a used car What mileage is OK for a used car? Q: 1. Some gaskets and seals and the timing belt has been replaced, but now I got the code P and the engine is hard to start. What could be the problem? A: Double check the timing between the crankshaft and the driven camshaft at the timing belt, as well as the timing between two camshafts, as the chain that runs between the camshafts can easily jump a tooth and this will be enough to set the P code.

Q: Chevrolet Malibu 3. The parts store scanned the computer and there was a code P Is it an expensive to repair problem?

Where do I start? A: Starting with a tune-up will be a good idea; as mentioned above, in these GM V6 engines the high resistance in the ignition components can cause arcing that could in turn cause the electrical interference with the camshaft sensor signal. If the spark plugs and wires haven't been replaced for a long time, this could easily cause this code.

Check the sensor's wiring and the connector for corrosion or loose connection. Also, it's worth to check the ground cable connection as this also can cause electrical problems. If your spark plugs look good, problems with your ignition system can also preventing a spark. These can range from a faulty spark plug lead, shorted kill switch or flywheel key damage. Please log in to reply. Very pleased with the car so far, however the car has the engine warning light on. Simple, try replacing the sensor I guess. However according to Citroen, this car doesn't have a Camhaft Position Sensor. The garage have had it on a diagnostics machine today which appears to have left them scratching their chins, as they get the same error but are being told the car doesn't have this particular sensor.

It is going back in next week for further tests. Does anyone have any idea of what may be causing this error on this car? Thanks and regards Noel.

I reset the light, but every now and then it would come on and stay on - just a massive pain to do it every few days.

The car went in for 2 days this week to the diagnostics place, who believe they have located the problem to be the Cam Phaser Sensor, which is embedded into the coil pack. They have replaced this and the light has not come back on yet. We shall see if this fixes it permanently! Posted 11 July - PM Well, over a week later, and I'm pleased to say that replacing the coil pack seems to have fixed the issue! No more light on.

Because while the lights vary in appearance from vehicle to vehicle, all have the same basic meaning: There's a problem with the car's emissions system. The on-board diagnostics system and engine control unit are in charge of monitoring a bunch of different, and if they get a reading that's a little out of whack, up pops the check engine light.

The computer notices the canister is empty when it detects a leaner condition all the vapors are used up and it resumes normal fuel delivery. Some car manufacturers then close the vent solenoid but leave the purge solenoid open.

That creates a vacuum throughout the entire fuel storage system.

Once the correct vacuum is reached, it closed the purge solenoid and waits to see if the vacuum holds. The crankshaft sensor signals the fuel injection computer or the ignition control when the cylinders are firing. This causes the ignition coil to provide a spark and the injector to inject fuel into each cylinder at the right time.

If either sensor isn't working correctly, the car will run rough and the engine will be less efficient. In later car models, the car's computer can usually keep the vehicle running, but the engine warning light on the dashboard goes on to warn the driver.
